Tree Removal Done Safely & Completely

Tree removal is one of the highest-risk jobs in the landscape industry β€” and the difference between a crew that knows what they're doing and one that doesn't is the difference between a clean job and a hole in your roof. At NoVA Tree Trimming, every removal is planned in detail before a single cut is made.

Our ISA-certified arborists assess the tree's lean, weight distribution, root condition, and proximity to structures before determining the removal method. For trees near homes, fences, or power lines, we use sectional takedowns with rigging β€” lowering each piece in a controlled sequence rather than felling the whole tree at once. Your lawn, landscaping, and structures are protected throughout.

We also handle permit research for jurisdictions that require removal permits (Arlington, Alexandria, and parts of Fairfax County all have tree ordinances). We'll tell you upfront if a permit is needed and what's involved.

What's Always Included

Every tree removal includes a full pre-job site assessment, sectional removal or full fell as appropriate, stump cut to ground level, complete debris cleanup, and a post-job walkthrough. We haul every log, branch, and chip off your property unless you want to keep the wood.

Our Process

On-Site Assessment & Estimate

We evaluate the tree's condition, size, lean, and proximity to structures. We check permit requirements for your jurisdiction and provide a written estimate.

Permit Research

If your municipality requires a tree removal permit, we'll identify what's needed and advise on the process. Permit fees, where required, are the homeowner's responsibility but we guide you through it.

Rigging & Sectional Removal

For trees near structures, our climbers rig and lower each section in sequence. For trees with open fall zones, we fell the tree whole. Property protection is laid before we begin.

Stump Cut to Grade

We cut the stump as close to ground level as our equipment allows. If you want full stump elimination, ask about our stump grinding service β€” we offer a discount when bundled with removal.

Full Cleanup & Walkthrough

All debris is chipped and hauled, or left as firewood logs if you prefer. We rake and blow the area clean, then walk the property with you before we leave.

When to Remove

Signs a Tree Needs to Come Down

Not every struggling tree needs removal β€” our arborists will always tell you honestly whether a tree can be saved. But these situations typically call for removal.

Most Urgent

Dead or Dying Trees

A dead tree loses structural integrity quickly. Bark falls away, wood becomes brittle, and root anchoring fails β€” often without visible warning. Dead trees near structures should be removed promptly.

Disease

Advanced Fungal or Bacterial Disease

Oak wilt, fire blight, and Armillaria root rot can kill trees from the inside out. When disease reaches the root system or vascular tissue, removal is often the only way to prevent spread to neighboring trees.

Structural

Severe Structural Defects

Co-dominant stems with included bark, large cracks running through major limbs, hollow trunks, or significant lean all indicate failure risk. An ISA-certified arborist can evaluate whether the risk is manageable.

Pest Damage

Emerald Ash Borer Infestation

EAB has killed tens of millions of ash trees in the eastern US. Once infestation is advanced, treatment is ineffective. Ash trees showing S-shaped galleries, D-shaped exit holes, or dieback above 50% typically need removal.

Location

Proximity to Structure or Utilities

Trees that have grown into or over rooflines, foundations, or power lines often can't be pruned to a safe condition. In these cases, removal is safer and more cost-effective than years of reactive pruning.

Storm Damage

Catastrophic Storm Damage

Major split trunks, uprooted root plates, or large sections of crown failure from storms often leave the remaining tree structurally unsound. We assess whether repair or removal is the right path.

How We Work

How We Protect Your Property

Tree removal near homes and landscaping requires careful planning. Here's how we protect what matters to you.

Rigging & Controlled Lowering

For trees near structures, each section is rigged with ropes and lowered in a controlled sequence β€” never dropped.

Lawn & Garden Protection

We lay ground protection before equipment moves in. Heavy machinery is kept off lawn where possible; when not, we mitigate compaction.

Structure Clearance Planning

Every job near a structure is mapped in advance. We identify drop zones, rope paths, and crew positions before work begins.

$2 Million Liability Coverage

We carry $2M in general liability insurance and full workers' compensation on every crew member. Ask for our certificate before any work starts.

Complete Site Cleanup

We chip all brush, haul all debris, rake and blow the area, and restore your property to better condition than we found it.

A Note on Permits in Northern Virginia

Several NoVA jurisdictions regulate the removal of significant trees β€” particularly large-diameter specimens or trees in protected areas. Arlington County, Alexandria, and parts of Fairfax County all have tree protection ordinances that may require a permit before removal.

We research permit requirements for every job as part of our free estimate process. If a permit is needed, we'll tell you exactly what's required and what the timeline looks like. Permit fees, where required, are typically modest ($25–$100) and paid by the homeowner.

Common Questions

Tree Removal FAQs

It depends on your jurisdiction. Arlington County requires a permit to remove any tree with a trunk diameter of 6 inches or more (measured at 4.5 feet from the ground). Alexandria has similar requirements. Fairfax County requirements vary by zoning district and tree size. Most other NoVA cities and counties do not require permits for trees on private residential property, but HOA rules may apply. We research permit requirements as part of your free estimate β€” just ask.
A single small or medium tree with good access typically takes 2–4 hours from setup to cleanup. Large trees, trees in tight spaces, or multi-tree jobs take longer β€” sometimes a full day. We'll give you a realistic time estimate when we scope the job. We don't rush removal jobs; cutting corners on a tree near your house is not something we're willing to do.
By default, we chip all brush and haul everything away β€” logs, chips, and all. If you'd like to keep wood for firewood, just let us know and we'll cut the trunk into rounds and stack them. If you want wood chips for mulch, we can leave a pile. Just tell us your preference when we schedule the job.
We lay plywood or ground protection mats in high-traffic areas before equipment comes in. Wherever possible, we keep heavy equipment on the driveway or street. When we have to work in the lawn, we work quickly to minimize compaction. We rake and blow the entire area before we leave, and any ruts from equipment are tamped down. In most cases, the lawn looks the same or better after cleanup than before.
Tree removal includes cutting the stump to ground level β€” but the stump itself remains in the ground. If you want the stump fully ground out below grade (so you can plant grass or use that space), our stump grinding service handles that. We offer a discounted bundle when stump grinding is scheduled with tree removal. Ask about pricing during your estimate.

Before You Hire Anyone for Tree Removal

Tree removal is high-risk work. Always verify: ISA certification (search at treesaregood.org), $1M+ liability insurance, workers' compensation coverage, and a written contract. Never pay full price upfront, and be wary of door-to-door solicitations after storms.

Removal vs. Saving the Tree

Our arborists will always give you an honest assessment of whether a tree can be saved through pruning, cabling, or treatment. We'd rather keep a healthy tree alive than remove it unnecessarily β€” removal is the last resort, not the first.

NoVA's Guarantee

We're fully insured, and we document the job scope in writing before we begin. If something isn't right when we're done, we come back and make it right. Our reputation in Northern Virginia is built on completing jobs cleanly and professionally, every time.
