Eliminate Trip Hazards
Stumps at or near ground level are a serious trip hazard β especially dangerous for children playing in the yard or guests unfamiliar with your property. Grinding removes the hazard completely.
Complete stump removal 6β12 inches below grade β reclaim your yard, eliminate trip hazards, prevent regrowth, and stop stumps from attracting termites and carpenter ants. Northern Virginia's stump grinding specialists.
A stump left in the ground after tree removal is more than an eyesore. It's a trip hazard, a pest magnet, and a source of new sprouts that can persist for years. Stump grinding is the fastest and most effective way to eliminate it entirely β and we grind deep enough that the area can be replanted, sodded, or built over.
Our commercial stump grinders reduce stumps to wood chips 6β12 inches below grade β well below the depth needed for grass seed or sod establishment. We then backfill the cavity with the ground chips and rake the area level. Within a few months, the chips decompose and the spot is fully workable.
If you've recently had a tree removed by us or another company and a stump was left behind, we'll handle just the grinding. We also schedule stump grinding at the same time as tree removal β and offer a discounted bundled rate when you do both together.
Every stump grinding job includes a site assessment, grinding 6β12 inches below grade, cleanup of all surface chips and debris, backfill of the void with ground chips, and final raking to leave a level surface. No extra charges for root surface grinding within a reasonable radius of the stump base.
We measure the stump diameter, assess access for equipment, check for buried utilities nearby, and provide a written quote. Call 811 before any grinding job β we recommend this for all customers.
Our commercial grinder works through the stump and major surface roots, reducing everything to wood chips 6β12 inches below the surrounding soil level β deep enough for turf, garden beds, or construction.
We gather the wood chip pile and use it to backfill the void, leaving the surface level with the surrounding grade. Excess chips can be left as mulch, used elsewhere in your yard, or hauled away.
The area is raked smooth. We walk the site with you to confirm the result before we leave. The spot is ready for topsoil, seed, or sod within a few days.
It's tempting to leave a stump and forget about it. Here's why most homeowners are glad they didn't.
Stumps at or near ground level are a serious trip hazard β especially dangerous for children playing in the yard or guests unfamiliar with your property. Grinding removes the hazard completely.
Decaying wood is prime habitat for termites, carpenter ants, and wood-boring beetles. A rotting stump in your yard significantly raises the risk of these pests making their way toward your home's structure.
Stumps force every mowing pass to go around them, and roots near the surface can damage mower blades. Removing the stump simplifies lawn maintenance and lets you make full use of your yard.
Many tree species β including maples, Bradford pears, and sweetgums β send up sprouts from cut stumps for years. Grinding the stump below grade eliminates the energy source for regrowth and stops the cycle.
After grinding, the area can be replanted with grass, turned into a garden bed, or built over. The void fills in and decomposes over a growing season, leaving fully usable, level ground.
Stumps from diseased trees β particularly those with oak wilt or Armillaria root rot β can serve as a reservoir for pathogen spread through root grafts with neighboring trees. Grinding disrupts that pathway.
Once the stump is ground out, here's what you can do with the space and how to get grass growing again.
Add 2β3 inches of quality topsoil over the chip-filled void, then seed or sod. Water regularly for the first few weeks. Expect full establishment in 4β8 weeks.
The chip-filled area makes excellent base material for a raised bed or planting area. Add topsoil and compost, let settle for a week, then plant.
The wood chips left below grade will fully decompose within 1β3 years depending on tree species and soil conditions. Some minor settling of the soil surface is normal in the first season.
Wait at least one growing season before planting a new tree in the same spot. The decomposing wood can temporarily tie up soil nitrogen. A soil test before replanting is a good idea.
Fresh wood chips make excellent garden mulch. Ask us to leave the chip pile in a specific area of your yard rather than backfilling, and spread them 2β3 inches deep around beds and trees.
