Stump Grinding That Clears the Way

A stump left in the ground after tree removal is more than an eyesore. It's a trip hazard, a pest magnet, and a source of new sprouts that can persist for years. Stump grinding is the fastest and most effective way to eliminate it entirely β€” and we grind deep enough that the area can be replanted, sodded, or built over.

Our commercial stump grinders reduce stumps to wood chips 6–12 inches below grade β€” well below the depth needed for grass seed or sod establishment. We then backfill the cavity with the ground chips and rake the area level. Within a few months, the chips decompose and the spot is fully workable.

If you've recently had a tree removed by us or another company and a stump was left behind, we'll handle just the grinding. We also schedule stump grinding at the same time as tree removal β€” and offer a discounted bundled rate when you do both together.

What's Always Included

Every stump grinding job includes a site assessment, grinding 6–12 inches below grade, cleanup of all surface chips and debris, backfill of the void with ground chips, and final raking to leave a level surface. No extra charges for root surface grinding within a reasonable radius of the stump base.

Our Process

On-Site Assessment & Estimate

We measure the stump diameter, assess access for equipment, check for buried utilities nearby, and provide a written quote. Call 811 before any grinding job β€” we recommend this for all customers.

Grinding 6–12" Below Grade

Our commercial grinder works through the stump and major surface roots, reducing everything to wood chips 6–12 inches below the surrounding soil level β€” deep enough for turf, garden beds, or construction.

Debris Cleanup & Backfill

We gather the wood chip pile and use it to backfill the void, leaving the surface level with the surrounding grade. Excess chips can be left as mulch, used elsewhere in your yard, or hauled away.

Final Rake & Walkthrough

The area is raked smooth. We walk the site with you to confirm the result before we leave. The spot is ready for topsoil, seed, or sod within a few days.

Why Remove Stumps

Why Stumps Are Worth Removing

It's tempting to leave a stump and forget about it. Here's why most homeowners are glad they didn't.

Safety

Eliminate Trip Hazards

Stumps at or near ground level are a serious trip hazard β€” especially dangerous for children playing in the yard or guests unfamiliar with your property. Grinding removes the hazard completely.

Pest Control

Stop Attracting Termites & Ants

Decaying wood is prime habitat for termites, carpenter ants, and wood-boring beetles. A rotting stump in your yard significantly raises the risk of these pests making their way toward your home's structure.

Lawn Care

Easier Mowing & Lawn Maintenance

Stumps force every mowing pass to go around them, and roots near the surface can damage mower blades. Removing the stump simplifies lawn maintenance and lets you make full use of your yard.

No Regrowth

Prevent Sprout Regrowth

Many tree species β€” including maples, Bradford pears, and sweetgums β€” send up sprouts from cut stumps for years. Grinding the stump below grade eliminates the energy source for regrowth and stops the cycle.

Curb Appeal

Reclaim Usable Yard Space

After grinding, the area can be replanted with grass, turned into a garden bed, or built over. The void fills in and decomposes over a growing season, leaving fully usable, level ground.

Disease

Prevent Fungal Disease Spread

Stumps from diseased trees β€” particularly those with oak wilt or Armillaria root rot β€” can serve as a reservoir for pathogen spread through root grafts with neighboring trees. Grinding disrupts that pathway.

After Grinding

What to Do After Stump Grinding

Once the stump is ground out, here's what you can do with the space and how to get grass growing again.

Planting Grass

Add 2–3 inches of quality topsoil over the chip-filled void, then seed or sod. Water regularly for the first few weeks. Expect full establishment in 4–8 weeks.

Garden Bed Installation

The chip-filled area makes excellent base material for a raised bed or planting area. Add topsoil and compost, let settle for a week, then plant.

About Wood Chip Decomposition

The wood chips left below grade will fully decompose within 1–3 years depending on tree species and soil conditions. Some minor settling of the soil surface is normal in the first season.

Planting a New Tree

Wait at least one growing season before planting a new tree in the same spot. The decomposing wood can temporarily tie up soil nitrogen. A soil test before replanting is a good idea.

Using Wood Chips as Mulch

Fresh wood chips make excellent garden mulch. Ask us to leave the chip pile in a specific area of your yard rather than backfilling, and spread them 2–3 inches deep around beds and trees.

Multiple Stumps? Ask About Bundle Pricing.

If you have several stumps to remove β€” from an old fence row, a cleared area, or multiple past tree removals β€” we offer significant discounts on multi-stump jobs. The more stumps we grind in a single visit, the lower the per-stump cost.

We've done jobs ranging from a single 10-inch stump to 30+ stumps cleared across a large property. Each job is quoted based on total stump diameter and access, not a flat per-stump rate. Call or submit a request and we'll put together a written quote for your specific situation.

Common Questions

Stump Grinding FAQs

We grind 6–12 inches below grade as standard β€” deep enough to allow topsoil and sod installation, or garden planting, directly over the area. If you need deeper grinding for a specific reason (such as laying a patio or foundation work), let us know and we can discuss options. We also grind the major surface roots radiating from the stump base.
Yes β€” with a small amount of prep. After grinding, we backfill the void with the wood chips. Add 2–3 inches of quality topsoil over the chips, then seed or lay sod. The topsoil layer provides a good growing medium while the chips below decompose. Water regularly and you'll have established turf in 4–8 weeks depending on the season and grass variety.
A single average stump (12–18 inches in diameter) typically takes 30–60 minutes from setup to cleanup. Larger stumps, stumps with extensive surface roots, or stumps in tight access areas take longer. We'll give you a realistic time estimate when we quote the job. Multi-stump jobs are typically completed in a single visit.
Fresh wood chips work well as pathway mulch or around established trees, but should be used with caution in vegetable gardens or annual beds β€” they can temporarily tie up soil nitrogen as they decompose. Chips from disease-free trees are fine to use. If the stump came from a diseased tree (particularly oak wilt or other fungal diseases), it's safer to dispose of the chips rather than spread them.
No. Grinding below grade eliminates the energy-producing capacity of the stump. You won't get regrowth from the ground stump itself. However, in some species (like Bradford pear or sweetgum), roots that extend beyond the grind radius may still produce suckers for a season or two. These are easily managed with mowing or spot herbicide treatment.

Always Call 811 Before Grinding

811 is the national call-before-you-dig hotline. Call at least 3 business days before stump grinding to have underground utilities marked. This is free and required by law in Virginia. Stumps near buried irrigation lines, gas lines, or electric service deserve extra care.

Stump Size Matters for Pricing

Stump grinding cost is primarily driven by trunk diameter at ground level. A 10-inch stump takes a fraction of the time of a 36-inch stump. Measure yours and mention it when you request a quote β€” it helps us give you an accurate estimate over the phone.

Bundle with Tree Removal

Scheduling stump grinding at the same time as tree removal saves you a mobilization fee. If you're having a tree removed, ask about adding stump grinding to the same job β€” we offer a bundled rate that's lower than scheduling them separately.
